The Classic Wardrobe Staples Every Girl Needs

Photography by Debs

You guys know I'm always one to champion a good classic wardrobe staple and today I'm at it again with one of my new favourite brands Hush.  As a lover of a well made pair of jeans and a breton stripe here and there I have no idea how Hush has escaped my fashion radar over the years but it had.  They approached me a few weeks back to work on this project and when I went to check out their site I was hooked after 2 seconds.  If you're already in the Huh fan club then you'll know what I mean, if not then go check out the site, I guarantee you'll fall in love with their collection!  There's also a cheeky little competition below where you can win a £200 Hush Gift Card to spend on vamping up your Autumn/Winter wardrobe, see below for details.

Today I'm focusing on those classic wardrobe staples which are perfect for creating an understated but chic look for Autumn (and to be honest, all other seasons).  First things first it is a very firm belief of mine that every woman should own a Breton stripe top or knit.  I have several but this stripe knit from Hush is my first black on white number, and I have to admit it does make me feel less Sailor and more Parisian chic.  The quality of Hush Knits are incredible and are certainly worth the money, you may have also seen me wearing this 'Etoile' slogan knit over on my social media channels.  I sized up to a size M in both knits as I wanted them to be cosy and oversized to create this look.

Now on to these jeans because let's face it, there's barely a day that goes by where I don't swaddle my legs in denim and I do love to road test denim from any new brands I'm introduced to.  Naturally I went for the boyfriend fit jeans and rolled them up into not-so-neat cuffs at the hems.  As with the knits, they're well made from quality fabric and therefore fit perfectly.  They have a stretch element to them which makes them super comfortable unlike the stiff denim you get from a pair of Levis.  I love the cute star detail stitching on the back pocket, it's a nice little feature which sets them apart from other denims.

This wouldn't be an autumnal look without a wool scarf which you can hunker down in when fighting that battle against the wind.  Now in my opinion there's no better combo than Breton stripes and a camel scarf, I hope you will agree?  But if not it also comes in navy and grey.  When it comes to scarves I live by the motto 'the bigger the better' and this wool scarf with fringe detail is like a giant blanket which makes for a must-have Autumn/Winter companion.

As the temperature starts to drop you can start to add some layers to this look.  A leather biker jacket can be layered over the top to add a bit of an edge to the look or if you love those super cosy vibes then why not double up your knits and layer with a long cardigan over the top.  When Winter comes I'd go for something like this green parka coat, which is currently right at the top of my 'Wish List' and a pair of ankle boots.

Are you short of any wardrobe staples? Or maybe you just need to update your wardrobe for this season, either way I'm offering you the chance to WIN a £200 Gift Card from Hush to spend as you wish.  To be in with a chance of winning visit the Hush site here and pick your favourite item, copy and paste the link into the comments box at the bottom of the page and tell me how you would style it in an outfit for Autumn.  I'll be picking my favourite on Friday October 28th at 6pm, make sure you leave your name and email address (example below) so I can contact you if you are the winner. This competition is open to UK residents only I'm afraid.

A striped shirt is always in my wardrobe as they’re so easy to chuck on on days where I feel a bit meh. I’m planning to buy myself a wool scarf to take on long haul flights as they’re so cozy to bundle up to!

    • 20th October 2016 / 8:33 am

Oh I agree, ‘meh’ days are the worst but thank the fashion gods for classics eh 😉 x

    • 20th October 2016 / 8:31 am

So sad that this competition Is only for UK residents…

That Jeans doesn’t look like a boyfriend cut on you… which size is that?

    Lilly x

    • 20th October 2016 / 8:28 am

Oh no, are you not in the UK? #SadTimes I’m wearing the size 8 and they aren’t a baggy boyfriend, it’s more the fit on the leg. I think they’re just perfect. I couldn’t have gone up to the 10 because they would have been too big on the waist 🙁 x

So very sad that I can’t take part on that competition
I have that Eskimo Parka on my Radar and wish List

Have the Same Breton stripe jumper – the Arms could be longer on the size Medium … or what do you think about that? (You have nearly the Same height)

        Sunny greetings from Aut

I love a striped top! You can’t beat it with ankle boots and a leather jacket x

    • 20th October 2016 / 9:33 am

      Such a classic combo 🙂 x

    I absolutely love the Azalea dress {}

This piece is so versatile, to be worn with an open toe sandal in summer, and with thick black tights and heeled boots in winter. Would love to throw on a big chunky knit over the top to keep things casual, or wear with some killer heels and a slick of red lippy for cocktail hour! Would get so much wear out of this piece – it’s the ultimate wardrobe staple.

    • 20th October 2016 / 9:34 am

Ooooo yes, love both combos Olivia x

    • 20th October 2016 / 9:35 am

      That dress is UH-MAZE! x

    • 20th October 2016 / 10:29 am

Thank you! A friend of mine had a Hush cashmere jumper on the other day and I just wanted to snuggle up with her, it was so soft and luxurious…now I want one! haha. x

    • 20th October 2016 / 10:28 am

HA! I love a good pun 😉 Such a classic look and love the addition of the Chanels x

Wow this is so hard to choose a fav as there as so many amazing essentials but I’m going to go for the Emma jump suit for winter celebrations and hoping the name wins me extra brownie points. Stunning as always!! Love this post.

  6. 20th October 2016 / 11:11 am

Its too hard to choose! but my desert island item would be the Onyx leather jacket
It is timeless, a lovely supple butter soft leather (try saying that after a few glasses of wine !). I would wear it with the Francesca skirt ( bit Isabel Marantish). Daytime with ankle boots and a cashmere round neck jumper and evening with heels and a silk camisole.
Ooh I want to go out now!

  7. Vicky Pearman
    20th October 2016 / 11:26 am

I would choose the Elsa coat and style it with my miss selfridge bell sleeved embroidered top, black super skinny jeans and a pair of black velvet shoes. I’m rubbish with technology so I will have to dm the pics to you and just hope my entry still counts ! I really love that coat and love the smart and streamlined look !

  8. 20th October 2016 / 11:33 am

Ah I LOOOOOVE Lush! My favourite piece currently is this:

Though admittedly I have about 15 things in my online basket at this moment so it was hard to choose!

I’d style this with some boyfriend jeans and then these Dalmatian print shoes I love but don’t get enough wear out of or some red pumps if I’m in a less monochrome mood, plus a new rose gold bracelet I just gifted myself and some doggy-shape earrings my husband bought me recently. Aaaand my current fave vegan handbag made from cork, plus a scarf with beagles all over that was a present for my mum…

I am clearly strongly visualising this – competition or not, I suspect that jumper will be finding its way into my wardrobe soon!

  9. Vicky
20th October 2016 / 12:44 pm (learnt how to copy and paste! ) I would style this with a charcoal grey scarf, a black top with bell sleeves and embroidered details, a pair of black ankle grazers skinny jeans, black suede sock boots and a simple black bag on a chain. Really hope you can visualise this ! I would love to win, never won a thing ever in my life !

My favourite item this season is the cashmere black roll neck:

This would be the most gorgeous, classic item to style for day-to-evening and night wear. I’d team it with the long-sleeved slub-cotton v- neck top in black, black and ecru star print Simone skirt, matching skinny star scarf, opaque tights and shearling-lined Chelsea boots for day.

I’d then switch to Velour skinny trousers, Cindy silk camisole, either black or ecru, pop on the roll neck and scarf, for the perfect outfit for an evening out, or in.

I’d change into the black jersey chemise, keeping warm with beautiful cashmere socks and that gorgeous jumper, to have breakfast the next morning. What a perfect night-away capsule wardrobe that would make and would easily fit in an overnight bag, or a stocking, of course! Sigh.

    • 31st October 2016 / 7:41 am

CONGRATULATIONS KAT! You are the winner of this competition, yaaaaaaaaay! Hush will be in touch shortly to arrange your gift card x

  11. 20th October 2016 / 3:44 pm

My favourite item is this scarf:

Firstly because of the super cute Peter Pan quotation. Secondly, it’s a scarf! So that’s me sorted in Autumn, Winter and early Spring! Thirdly, the colour, however boring charcoal can be, for me it’s the ultimate, as goes with anything and different from black. Lastly as it’s not cashmere, it means I can wash it overnight and have it dried ready for the next day without the hassle!
I would wear this with anything, which sounds like a cop out but that’s the beautiful of a scarf! If you wrapped it around you in various ways it’s a staple all year round!
Right now, I would team it with my new camel over coat, black flounce sleeved funnel neck jumper, skinny black jeans and black suede over the knee boots! Plus a big bag and sunglasses, autumnal sun can be a nightmare!

  12. 20th October 2016 / 6:09 pm

Love the sweater and scarf. Although, interestingly enough, I’ve only ever heard the term Breton from either UK bloggers or UK brands. Is this a thing?

    • 20th October 2016 / 8:01 pm

It’s actually French, something to do with sailors I believe. Breton stripes are synonymous with Parisian style 🙂 x

Gorgeous photos as usual Em and such a lovely outfit! I would love to get the Josie Jumpsuit as I’d like to wear it for the Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards where I have been shortlisted. I don’t know what to wear and jumpsuits are always a win for me. I’d style it with a pair of Gianvito Rossi shoes, the plexi pumps with the black velvet and my Chanel WOC 😉

    Creepers & Cupcakes

  14. 20th October 2016 / 7:38 pm

Lovely colours that are perfect for autumn.x

  15. 20th October 2016 / 7:54 pm

Hush have some amazing pieces but this cropped teddy cardi just spoke to me. I’d try and channel the Scandi bloggers by wearing this with the perfect blue straight slim leg jeans, a grey tee and bad ass buckled ankle boots for the day & then with luxe joggers for snuggling up at home with my daughter. Don’t you think it’s a bit Marant inspired?

  16. Kim Wall
    20th October 2016 / 8:29 pm

I love this cami! It’s such a good item to take you from summer to autumn/winter. With the current weather I’d chuck a lightweight poloneck under with some leather biker trousers to toughen it up a bit! I’d also wear it on a night out tucked in to some high waisted wide trousers with a cute dainty necklace – faux fur jacket over the shoulders. 🙂

  17. Sarsybubblebrain
    20th October 2016 / 10:13 pm

Loving the simplicity of the Elsa coat which can be dressed up with Hush cashmere scarf, ankle boots and dress! My wardrobe is in desperate need of fresh Hush of clothing inspiration!

    21st October 2016 / 12:26 am

Since I currently have a massive autumn cold I couldn’t have chosen anything else other than a cashmere neck roll jumper! is anyone else as obssesed with this as I am… something realaxed but smart, easy to throw on in the morning with a pair of black trousers, little heels, sunglasses (even if it’s raining obvs, this is London!) and you’re ready for the office, just quickly swap the trousers for a pair of jeans, (not like I’m getting any inspiration from your post… nahhh)and you’re ready for after work drinks. Chasmere is always a good choice isn’t it

Breton stipe top + jeans = my uniform! You can’t fault a classic!

So to change it it up I picked the ‘Claudia’ dress which I think would look amazing with some black suede heeled knee-high boots, a cropped leather jacket and a snazzy scarf to add some colour.

  20. 21st October 2016 / 2:25 pm

I, like you, have only just discovered Hush, I bought their C’est si Bon jumper a few weeks ago alongside some pjamma bottoms and I love both. I love the classics you’ve chosen, they look great. The item I am most coveting right now is the Azalea dress which I would team with a biker jacket, a slim belt, thick black tights and slouchy ankle boots, hair slightly wavy and in side clips.

  21. Jasmin Bateman
    22nd October 2016 / 6:47 pm

    My favourite item is:

I would style this gorgeous silk camisole with a pair of boyfriend jeans, a leather jacket and some barely there heels. It’s the perfect colour for A/W!

I love the Hush brand so much and will be certainly be ordering some new items to spruce up my Winter wardrobe!

  22. Laura Hutcheson
    22nd October 2016 / 7:24 pm

It’s SO hard to choose a fav! I think I would have to go with this shirt
Because at the moment I’m loving a pop of red amongst the autumnal palette and I’m also venturing into the world of animal print!
I would wear tucked into the front of faded boyfriend jeans with Stan Smiths and a biker jacket for an everyday look. Or tucked in the front of black skinny jeans, pointed Louboutins and a three-quarter length sleeve black tux jacket evening xxx
Now I’m just sad that gorgeous camel scarf is out of stock

My favourite is this faux fur gilet

I think this piece is really versatile and can be worn a number of ways throughout autumn/winter. I can wear it over a leather jacket or blazer to keep me extra warm and just on its own. It can also be dressed up or down from day to night and can really make a basic outfit look luxe and interesting!.

  24. 23rd October 2016 / 3:23 pm

I love love love this essential crew in a’blush’colour

I would style it with a straight leg jean and my anime bing gold boots that are on their way this week (I can’t wait!) for a weekend look and maybe do a preppy denim shirt underneath it for a smarter work day look.

Since getting huge having a baby and now back to ‘normal’ I am building a new capsule wardrobe (slowly) of gorgeous things to wear for my new life as a working mummy (who lives in the middle of nowhere but still wants to look and feel great)

Hush is a definite go to brand for me as I love their grey and blush shades… just right!

I started a little blog to make me feel more like me, it’s about elevating the everyday and hush clothes definitely do this!

Love your blog and your style. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Fingers crossed!

I would have to choose this dreamy green fur coat…

Not just because I’m feeling the Grinchy vibes for Christmas but I think it’s the perfect statement coat for a night on the town. The Geordie in me means I shouldn’t really wear a coat on a night out but I wouldn’t be able to resist this furry number!

    Gaby x

    Good evening Emma,

Great competition, I have just seen that gorgeous Hush jumper on your haul and it has given me a new impression on Hush!
    My favourite is
It is perfect for the winter celebration season and I would pair it with some edgy back ankle boots and a statement belt.
For evening a long MaxMara camel coat and for day it would look great with a Allsaints leather jacket.

  27. 24th October 2016 / 8:43 pm

    You Look amazing! Xx

    My favourite item:

I would style this with a white top, black jeans, heeled boots and a black bag 🙂
Could also wear this for evening with a beautiful dress/jumpsuit and add deatils such as earrings, clutch bag, heels and necklace that are glamourous looking.
So overall this item could be perfect for day wear in a fun and casual style or evening wear in a glamourous style.

I’m loving this dress… I think it’s super girly but for autumn you could really grunge it up with a nice leather jacket and some chloe susanna boots (if I could afford them!), pair with a slouchy bag and you are good to go anywhere! X

    My favourite item is

I’m currently pregnant, and the bump is still under wraps from friends, family and work so I’m on the hunt for comfy, but trendy clothes to conceal my bulge! I love hush clothes and they have so many cool top and bottom options that I can wear the whole 9 months and beyond.

I would wear the tee with skinny (maternity) jeans, heeled ankle boots and a chunky scarf and long necklace. All about accessories at the moment to detract from my mid section

    Hi Emma,

I love the Dream Fur Jacket

With the party season approcahing I’d style this with black leather trousers, a black or leopard print silk camisole and classic black court shoes.

For everyday style I’d wear the jacket with a grey or black turtle neck, black skinny jeans and black leather biker boots. Perfect glam-rock chick.

Lovely post and styling as always! My favourite piece is actually the camel wool scarf which you are wearing in your post because it’s so chic and cosy looking:

I have had my eye on this for a while, as I have been on the hunt for the perfect camel scarf and so many are too orange/brown and not a nice enough nice knit! Hopefully, this one will come back in stock soon 🙁

I would style it with black skinny jeans, a cosy neutral knit, a leather biker jacket and maybe some leopard ankle boots! Fingers crossed 🙂 x
